Spotting Fake Candidates
Our role is crucial in effectively screening candidates to prevent undesirable outcomes whenever possible. While the client ultimately makes the final hiring decision, our goal is to provide them with a selection of qualified and genuine candidates to consider.
While it's important to be vigilant, it's equally critical not to discriminate or make assumptions about any group of people while considering candidates for job opportunities. Each individual should be given a fair chance based on their unique background and qualifications.
The following recommendations are intended as guidance; the referrer is responsible for the final determination of a candidate's suitability for a given position.
Personal Network and Direct Communication: One effective way to ensure a candidate's authenticity is by tapping into personal networks or engaging in direct conversations with them through in-person meetings, phone calls, or video calls. Over-reliance on text-based communication can leave room for ambiguity about a candidate's true identity.
Employment History Verification: Previous employment history can help establish legitimacy. Verify if past positions align with the companies they've claimed to work at and whether those firms operate in the specified locations.
Skill Check: Malicious actors often mention every skill a referrer might be looking for. To ensure the candidate has the claimed skills, consider checking their github to see if they have projects using the lauguages required for the position.
Social Media Presence: Remember, a lack of social media presence doesn't necessarily indicate fraudulence. Red flags to look out for are fake engagement, like comments on posts that are not related to the content they are commenting on.
The best way to screen candidates is on a video call. Some clients will insist candidates have been spoken to on video prior to submission.
